Housing Programs

AAA Senior Home Repair

Assists senior homeowners in Calhoun County with minor home repairs up to $500.

CDBG Home Rehabilitation

Provides home rehabilitation and emergency repairs for those living in Calhoun County and who meet the 80% of median income guidelines. Rehabilitation is limited to $10,000 for lead remediation and $25,000 in renovations. This funding is made possible through the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA).

DHS Rural Supportive Housing

Provides case management to those who are chronically homeless.

Home Rehabilitation

Provides major home repairs to houses within the City of Battle Creek limits up to $25,000. Eligible homes will receive final inspection from the City of Battle Creek’s Code Compliance Office and must meet all HUD Lead Based Paint regulations. Funds are deferred over a 5 and/or 10 year period depending on the dollar amount of the rehabilitation work (Must provide proof of all household income, homeownership, demonstrate property taxes are current, and proof of homeowners insurance.

Home Weatherization

CAA’s Home Weatherization Program provides weatherization services to those meeting the 150% poverty income guidelines. Weatherization services may include attic/wall insulation, caulking, refrigerator replacement, venting, weather-stripping, glass replacement, door repair/replacement, minor roof and foundation repair. Must provide all household income for the past 12 months, homeownership or sign landlord/tenant agreement if rental unit(s), and history of fuel costs for the past 12 months.

Program Available In: Barry, Branch, Calhoun, and St. Joseph Counties

Referrals for Food, Clothing, and Personal Items

This program provides referrals to individuals and families who need food, clothing, and personal items, but who cannot afford them.

Eligibility: Meet HUD income guidelines and reside in the City of Battle Creek

Senior Minor Home Repair

Provides minor home repair for low-income senior homeowners living outside the Battle Creek area in Calhoun County.  Senior homeowners, below 250% of the poverty level, (i.e. one person household - $24,500; two person household - $33,000), are eligible for this service, which offers permanent restoration and/or renovation to extend the life of a senior’s home.  This program is funded through the Calhoun County Senior Millage.

 

Support Services

CAA Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

CAA-VITA is a free service for low- to moderate-income working families to make them aware of Federal and Michigan tax credits, and to assist them in receiving their credits and refunds without fees or interest.

Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP)

Assist with up to a 30-day supply of primary fuel, electric and water. Client must show proof of all household income, shut off, payment history, regular monthly bill, and decision notice from the Department of Human Services.

Emergency Services Contract

Assist in one-time emergency utility, shelter, property taxes, emergency hotel/motel assistance, etc.

Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program

This is a HUD initiative that encourages Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) participants towards economic independence. MSHDA develops an Individual Services Plan with the HCV participants, which serves to commit them to self-sufficiency by obtaining employment, going to school, or learning a trade.

Walk for Warmth

This is the Agency’s annual fund-raiser that is held every 4th Saturday in February. Assist in one-time emergency utility assistance. Assistance through the Walk for Warmth program must be heat related such as deliverable fuel, metered gas or electric.

 

Transportation

Buses with and without lifts are available to transport seniors over age 60 and disabled persons of any age to medical appointments, employment sites, congregate meal centers, grocery shopping, and other necessary trips. CAA busses are equipped with cellular phones for return-trip scheduling and emergency use. In addition, local doctors may have the CAA bus number to arrange emergency transportation services on behalf of patients who need to get to their offices. Services are provided at no cost to the passenger, but donations are accepted.

Service is provided in the Battle Creek area Monday through Friday from 8:00am - 4:30pm; and in the Albion area Monday through Friday from 7:45am to 3:45pm. Service must be scheduled 24 hours in advance, and are subject to availability. Transportation is provided by professional and courteous CAA staff.

Eligibility: Seniors 60 years of age and older, or disabled persons of any age.

NOTE: Eligibility for Transportation is not based on income, and seniors and disabled persons of all financial levels are invited to request needed services.
